The Host
City:
 |
|
|
The old town of Limassol is the heart of the
city with its narrow streets radiating out
from the old fishing harbour. The medieval
Limassol castle was the site of a royal
wedding in the Middle Ages between Richard
the Lionheart, King of England, and
Berengaria of Navarre. It now houses the
Cyprus Medieval Museum.
The town has grown in recent years and now covers a 15 kilometres
coastline lined with hotels and apartment
blocks, interspersed with eucalyptus groves
and linked by a promenade popular with
walkers or joggers.
The city’s inhabitants are renowned for their love of fun so not
surprisingly the city’s nightlife is varied.
All sorts of tavernas, discos and clubs are
open all the year round, while beach bars
along the coastal walkway add to the choice.
Visitors join in the Bacchian excesses at
the Wine Festival in September, or have fun
at the Carnival with its fancy dress chariot
parade and parties during Carnival in
February. In summer concerts are held under
the stars in the Greco-Roman theatre of
Kourion. |

Marios
Agapiou of Cyprus attacks against the Croatian
block, Sunday evening in Limassol.
Croatia Shuts Out Cyprus, Qualifies to Next Round
LIMASSOL, Cyprus, 8 January, 2012 - Croatia shut
out Cyprus 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14) in the closing
match of 1st Round Pool 2 of the 2012 Men's Junior
European Championships. The victory earns Croatia
first place in the pool and a berth in the next
round of the competition. Switzerland was second and
Cyprus third in the final standings of the Limassol
tournament.
Cyprus did put up some decent resistance to the
Croats in the second set, leading by two points at
the second technical time-out, but the visiting team
rallied from 16-18 to retake the lead at 19-18 and
continued to finish the set with five points to
spare.
Although Cyprus outblocked the Croats with 9 stuffs
to 7, this was not enough to counter the reception
problems of the home team: Croatia scored 9 aces to
just one for Cyprus. Ugljesa Vujovic of Croatia was
top scorer of the match, with 16 points.
"I am very happy for our qualification to the next
round," said Hrvoje Borovina, head coach of Crotia.
"It was a nice tournament for us and I'm glad that I
managed to see and test all my players in today's
match. I am satisfied that they have followed my
instructions in our tactics in the game. Opposite us
today we had a good opponent, especially in defence
and because of that we had to do our best to win the
match".
"We were better than yesterday," said Head Coach of
the Cyprus team, Kostas Delikostas. "My players did
well in tactics, but we were lacking in recpetion,
although our blocking was good today. The positive
outcome is that now we know where we stand and this
is our compass for the future."
Croatia now enters Pool B of the 2nd Round of the
European Championships, in the Ukraine next April,
against the home team plus Belgium, Hungary, Israel
and the Netherlands.

Adrian Heidrich of
Switzerland attacks against the Cyprus block,
Saturday evening in Limassol.
Switzerland Sweeps
Past Cyprus to Lead Standings
LIMASSOL, Cyprus, 7 January 2012 - Switzerland
overcame the shock of their opening day defeat, to
sweep past Cyprus 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-17) on day 2
of the 1st Round Pool 2 of the 2012 Men's Junior
European Championships, here Saturday.
The far taller Swiss were superior in all skills,
outblocking (with 9 stuffs to 7), outserving (6 aces
to 2) and outattacking (40 kills to 27) the home
team.
Adrian Heidrich of Switzerland was the best player
and top scorer (with 14 points) of the match, but
was closely followed in scoring by Cyprus' Giorgos
Moschovakis (12 points).
"After the defeat of yesterday I am glad that we
played the way we did," said Switzerland's Head
Coach, Winteler Urs. "We were always positive in not
thinking of last night's match and we remained
concentrated on the task at hand. I'm happy that we
got the win that we wanted".
"The difference between the two teams was obvious,"
said Kostas Delikostas, Head Coach of Cyprus.
"Switzerland was three times as quick as we were and
our players were very stressed. We were hoping to
have scored more points in each set."
Switzerland now leads the standings, but has already
completed its matches in the Pool and awaits the
outcome of the last day of competition. The Limassol
tournament concludes Sunday with Cyprus taking on
Croatia at 19:00 local time (17:00 GMT).

Adrian
Heidrich of Switzerland attacks before the Croatian
block, Friday evening in Limassol.
Croatia Outlasts
Switzerland in Five-Set Cliff-hanger
LIMASSOL, Cyprus, 6 January, 2012 - Croatia scored
an amazing five-set victory over Switzerland on the
opening day of 1st Round Pool 2 of the 2012 Men's
Junior European Championships, here, with a final
3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 27-29, 18-16). The result
could well prove decisive in the quest for a berth
in the next round of the competition.
Twice Switzerland gained wide, early leads in the
first two sets and twice Croatia came back to win
them both for an overall 2-0 But still, Switzerland
wouldn't give up, as Winteler Urs' boys closed in by
winning the third set.
Then Croatia tried to pull off the same trick again,
coming back in the fourth from 17-8 to tie the score
at 24-24 and even blew a couple of match balls at
26-25 and 27-26, before Switzerland eventually forced the match
into a tie break.
After a very close fifth set, Croatia was first to
reach match point at 14-12 and blew a total of four
(while holding off Switzerland at one of their own)
before clinching the set and the match.
Croatia's Fran Peterlin was man of the match and top
scorer with 36 points. He was followed by
Switzerland's Nico Beeler, who scored 22.
Switzerland outserved Croatia with 7 aces to 5, but
trailed in blocking (16 stuffs to 18) and attacking
(56 kills to 66).
"We played against a very good team that made very
few mistakes," said Hrvoje Borovina, head coach of
Croatia. "It's very hard to play against this kind
of team, but I'm very happy for my team for winning
this match, as the result was decided in little
details. This result may push us forward now to the
next match and maybe to the next round".
"I am very dissapointed from the result and I feel
we should have the match," said Winteler Urs, head
coach of Switzerland, after the game. "We have more
qualities than Croatia as a team and we played quite
good, but little mistakes cost us the match".
Action in Limassol continues Saturday, when the home
team enters the competition taking on Switzerland at
19:00 local time (17:00 GMT).

to Launch the New Year

volleyball on this Mediterranean island.
The Cyprus Volleyball Federation embarks on a season
that will, for the first time ever see its national
teams competing across the board in junior, senior
and small nations division events. This is a bid to
bring Cyprus volleyball out of the confines of the

the sport on the Continent.

several years before bearing fruits, the Men’s
Junior National Team of Cyprus takes on Switzerland
and Croatia in Limassol 6-8 January in a quest for a
single qualifying position for the 2nd Round.
“We don’t know much about our opponents, but
obviously both our opponents are more experienced
and with a stronger tradition behind them,” said
head coach of the Cyprus team, Costas Delikostas.
“Nonetheless, this is a unique chance to begin
getting some exposure in European volleyball.”
The tournament in Limassol begins with the two
visiting teams battling it out between them, before
the hosts take on Switzerland and Croatia in
succession. The top team of the Limassol tournament
will qualify to Pool B of the 2nd Round in the
Ukraine in April.
“Cyprus volleyball is coming out in full force with
teams entered in all CEV competitions this year,”
said the President of the Cyprus Volleyball
Federation, Damianos Hadjidamianou. “We want Cyprus
to be present wherever there is an international
event and upon this base we will try and build the
future of volleyball in our country.”
